A liver transplant is a surgical procedure to replace a diseased liver with a healthy liver from another person. The donor liver can be either from a deceased donor or a living donor. In cases of a deceased donor, the entire liver is used, while a living donor can donate a part of their liver, thanks to the liver's ability to regenerate. The process involves removing the recipient's damaged liver and replacing it with the donor liver. If the transplant is from a living donor, both the donor and recipient's livers will eventually grow back to normal size, although their shapes may be slightly different. Liver transplants are primarily performed for chronic liver diseases and liver cancer that lead to liver failure. The procedure can significantly improve the recipient's life expectancy and quality of life. Various types of liver transplants include Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT), Deceased Donor Liver Transplant (DDLT), Pediatric LDLT for children, ABO-Incompatible LDLT for mismatched blood types, and Emergency LDLT for acute liver failure.
