Liver and Gallbladder Anatomy The liver and gallbladder are vital organs in the digestive system, working together to aid in digestion and metabolism. Located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, just beneath the diaphragm, the liver is the largest internal organ and has a wide range of functions, including detoxification, metabolism of nutrients, and production of bile. The liver is divided into two main lobes (right and left) and is composed of smaller functional units called lobules. It receives blood from two sources: the hepatic artery (oxygen-rich blood from the heart) and the portal vein (nutrient-rich blood from the intestines). One of the liver’s key roles is to produce bile, a fluid that helps digest fats. Bile produced by the liver is transported through a network of ducts, including the hepatic ducts, into the common bile duct. This duct either delivers bile directly to the small intestine or stores it in the gallbladder, a small, pear-shaped organ located under the liver. The gallbladder acts as a storage reservoir for bile. Between meals, it stores and concentrates bile. When food, especially fatty food, enters the small intestine, the hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) signals the gallbladder to contract and release bile through the cystic duct into the common bile duct and then into the small intestine to aid in digestion. Together, the liver and gallbladder play a central role in processing nutrients, breaking down fats, and removing toxins from the body. Any dysfunction in these organs—such as gallstones, inflammation, or liver disease—can significantly impact digestive health and overall well-being. Understanding their anatomy helps in diagnosing and managing various gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions effectively.
