Fatty Liver Disease (Hepatic Steatosis) is a common condition in which excess fat accumulates in the liver cells. It is increasingly seen due to modern lifestyle habits such as unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, obesity, diabetes, and excessive alcohol consumption. There are two main types of fatty liver disease. Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD) occurs due to long-term alcohol intake, while Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) develops in people who drink little or no alcohol. NAFLD is now one of the most common liver disorders, especially in India. In the early stages, fatty liver often has no symptoms. Some people may experience fatigue, mild abdominal discomfort, or a feeling of heaviness on the right side of the abdomen. If left untreated, fatty liver can progress to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. Diagnosis is usually made through blood tests, ultrasound, FibroScan, or CT scan. Early detection is important because fatty liver is reversible in most cases. Treatment mainly focuses on lifestyle modification. Weight loss through regular exercise, a balanced diet, reduced sugar and fat intake, and complete avoidance of alcohol can significantly improve liver health. Managing diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure is also essential. Currently, there is no specific medication for fatty liver, but timely medical guidance can prevent complications. Fatty liver disease is a silent but serious condition. With early diagnosis, healthy lifestyle changes, and regular follow-up, liver damage can be prevented and reversed, helping patients lead a normal and healthy life.
